Yes, Office for Mac 2011 is comparable to Office 2010 for PC. Getting into the last few weeks of beta testing Office 2011 pretty much answered my comparison questions. Would it be comparable to Office 2010 for the PC, I wondered? As the program was ending, I heard rumblings of Office 2011 for the Mac.
Also, I got quite a lot of hands-on experience with Office 2010 over the past several months. Monthly webinars and an online forum quickly got me introduced and trained on new features, of which there were many. I first spent quite a few months with Office 2010 for the PC in the Real Life Stories program. The last release for the Mac was Office 2008, which seems like eons ago. I have been regularly upgrading my Office suites on both platforms and had felt that the Mac was getting a little neglected.

It’s been several years since the latest facelift of Office for Mac 2011, and I was eager to find out what the developers at Microsoft had up their sleeves for this major revamp of the software suite. Times have changed, and so has Microsoft Office. In the past, the two platform-specific Office suites seemed to me to be disparate and almost from completely different companies. Leveraging the success of that program, I was able to get involved in the tail-end of the Office for Mac 2011 early access program. Earlier this year, I participated in a program set up by Microsoft called “ Office 2010 Real Life Stories”. If you really want the toolbar button, with Word 2011 and the new "Ribbon", it seems to only let you drag the custom toolbar entry to the toolbar at very top of the Word window.I must admit, I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to getting early access to the latest versions of Microsoft Office. View > Toolbars > Customize Toolbars & Menus > (Click "Commands" tab) > (Click "All Commands" filter) > Overtype (drag either to menu or toolbar)

I rarely use Overtype but occasionally it's invaluable for completing basically assembled forms in word where form authors have relied (a little annoyingly, albeit well intended) on the use of underscores to block out a fillable area. I searched and searched online and couldn't find info because the word - overtype - was not in my personal vocabulary, so I didn't search for it. If you click the OVR word, its circle will turn green and you will write over text until you again click the OVR box.

Nothing is listed on any of the menus, or when I searched the help field (that's because the Mac calls it "overtype," which I didn't know at the time).Īt the very bottom of the document's screen, there are some bits of information (page, section, total number of pages, etc.).
